The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) today announced that, at the agency's request, Bayer Pharmaceuticals Corp. has agreed to a marketing suspension of Trasylol, a drug used to control bleeding during heart surgery, pending detailed review of preliminary results from a Canadian study that suggested an increased risk for death.

Bayer Halts Sale of Trasylol

Trasylol Anti-Bleeding Drug
Bayer Pharmaceutical developed the drug Trasylol (aprotinin) to prevent blood loss and to limit the need for blood transfusions during heart bypass surgery. The drug has become Bayer's fastest-growing prescription medication, administered to more than 150,000 heart patients each year in an effort to prevent excess blood loss during their procedures.
Trasylol Side Effects
Some patients experience serious side effects when administered Trasylol after heart surgery. Bayer acknowledges that Trasylol increases the risk of renal dysfunction and may increase the need for dialysis in the perioperative period for patients administered the drug. In fact, one study showed that Trasylol doubles the risk of kidney failure and stroke in heart surgery patients. The adverse side effects associated with Trasylol include kidney failure, heart attacks, and strokes.
If you have suffered a heart attack, kidney failure, or stroke after having had coronary artery bypass surgery, your medical condition may have been caused by Trasylol.
Injured by Trasylol?
Many people who have taken Trasylol do not even know it, because it is administered by injection during the recovery period immediately after surgery. If you or a loved one has suffered heart failure, kidney failure, or a stroke after coronary surgery, talk with your doctor or medical provider. They will be able to inform you if you have indeed been administered the drug.
If you have suffered an adverse side effect or if a loved one has died after being prescribed Trasylol, you may be entitled to compensation for your financial losses and suffering.
